The Banking Beyond Bars program originated from a January 2023 meeting between Darryl Riley, Co-Founder of the Up from Slavery Initiative, and Scott Prior, President and CEO of Connection Credit Union. The purpose of their discussion was to explore ways to expand financial literacy and improve access to financial services for underserved populations and youth within the community. Together, they determined one of those underserved populations was formerly incarcerated individuals. As a result of that meeting, the partnership was formed, and the Banking Beyond Bars program was launched.
To create opportunities for formerly incarcerated individuals to build financial literacy, develop financial confidence, and access the resources and tools needed to achieve long-term financial stability and success. Providing personalized financial counseling and the support of a trusted local financial institution.
A future where every formerly incarcerated individual possesses the financial knowledge, confidence, and access to resources needed to build lasting financial stability, create generational wealth, and achieve economic empowerment, that positively impacts their families, transforms communities, and breaks cycles of financial hardship for generations to come.
We believe every individual has the capacity to build a successful financial future when provided with the knowledge, tools, and opportunities needed to succeed.
We treat every person with compassion, respect, and without judgment.
We believe past mistakes should not define a person’s future. We advocate for equitable access to financial services, resources, and opportunities that empower individuals to rebuild and achieve long-term success.
We build relationships founded on honesty, transparency, accountability, and a commitment to supporting those we serve.
We believe financial stability creates lasting ripple effects that strengthen families, uplift communities, and break cycles of financial hardship for future generations.
